Centers Of Excellence
The Tulane
Cancer Center (TCC) was established in 1993 to enhance biomedical
education, to foster scientific discoveries in cancer, to translate the latest
in scientific research to the clinical arena, and to provide a model for comprehensive
cancer care that spans the continuum from public health approaches to prevention,
to coordinated multidisciplinary treatment, to effective psycho-social rehabilitation.
- TCC Task Forces include: Breast Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Lymphoid Cancer,
Myeloid Malignancies, Liver Cancer, and AIDS-related Malignancies.
- The Tulane Bone Marrow Transplant Program provides state-of-the-art treatment
and conducts research of adult and pediatric allogenic (donor's marrow) transplants
and autologous (patient's marrow) transplants for a variety of malignant and
nonmalignant diseases.
- Other associated programs include: Genetic Counseling, Breast Health Program,
Prostate Health Program, and Community Outreach & Education programs (i.e.,
Friends for Life, an early detection & risk reduction "buddy" system).
The Tulane/Xavier
National Center Of Excellence In Women's Health is the only Center
of Excellence in the Deep South whose exclusive mission is to enhance the health
of women in the local area and the region. This will be accomplished through the
use of comprehensive community-engaged and community-developed solutions to health
promotion, research and disease prevention/intervention.
Specific areas of focus include:
- Cardiovascular disease;
- Cancers;
- Gender-based research;
- Sexually transmitted diseases.
Institute faculty conduct health services research in several areas, including:
- Policy analysis concerning options for extending coverage to the uninsured;
- Medicaid policy, including cost containment, access to care, and managed
care;
- The Medicare program and options for its restructuring;
- Analysis of the Federal Employee Health Benefit Program;
- The impact of managed care on hospital services and the provision of care
to low income populations;
- The social importance and economic impact of hospital conversions;
- Measurement of changes in health care prices and payments;
- Health care and labor policy;
- Health policy issues facing Louisiana and the South.
The Center For Infectious Diseases has an international
reputation for infectious disease research and treatment, including:
- HIV/AIDS in adults and children
- Emerging infectious diseases
- Encephalitis
- Lyme disease
- Malaria
- Vaccine development
The Environmental Diseases Prevention Research Center
is the first center of its kind in the Gulf South. The Center focuses on elimination
of the adverse health consequences of heavy metals, such as lead and mercury.
Studies encompass toxicology, epidemiology, biostatistics, and community research.
Areas of research:
- Environmental diseases;
- Environmental impact on basic health of those in poverty;
- Organic pollutants in the air, water and food;
- Lead and mercury contamination;
- Studies of nutrients and pesticides.
The Center
For Cardiovascular Health offers extensive information on cardiovascular
research and conducts training, education and community programs.
The Bogalusa Heart
Study is a world-renowned comprehensive investigation of the origins of
coronary artery disease and hypertension. Research areas:
- Congenital heart disease
- Coronary vascular disease
- Hypertension
- Peripheral vascular disease
- Vascular biology
Other programs Include:
The Center For Bioenvironmental
Research (CBR) is another Tulane/Xavier collaboration. It is an
interdisciplinary research center dedicated to investigating the causes and effects
of environmental problems and devising practical solutions for them.
- Fosters extensive collaborative research with toxicology, medicine, epidemiology,
cell and molecular biology, chemistry, ecology, engineering, and information
sciences.
- Promotes the use of science in the formulation of public policy and offers
expert communication about environmental health risks and their management.
- Conducts research in environmental
astrobiology, environmental
endocrinology, bioenvironmental hazards, and emerging diseases in changing
times.
- Investigates causes and effects of environmental problems; devises practical
solutions.
