The Legislative Advocacy Network was established in 1996 as part of an effort to encourage activism by Tulane alumni in state government on issues that impact health care, higher education and research. Network membership has grown to more than 250 alumni, faculty and friends, and allows many champions of Tulane University to get involved in the legislative process. Members are located throughout the state to ensure Tulane representation in as many legislative districts as possible.
Participation in the NetworkWe ask that network members establish and maintain a relationship with their state senator and representative and other legislators they may already know. The effect of these individual efforts is multiplied as other network members from around the state do the same. On occasion, we might ask members to write or call their local legislators to let them know Tulane University's position on an issue. This year, members of the network participated in a Thank You Campaign, in which network members sent thank you cards to their local senator and representative. The Political ProcessWhether you are active politically or just becoming familiar with the process, participation counts; legislators place high value on the opinions of their constituents. Your involvement on behalf of Tulane University reminds our legislators and key policy makers how important higher education, health care and research is to the state of Louisiana. Throughout the year, Tulane will work to coordinate alumni functions and opportunities to bring together legislators, policy makers and members of our Legislative Advocacy Network. These events may be held in your city or town. You tailor your level of involvement. You can commit as much or as little time as your schedule and lifestyle will allow. Legislative NewsletterStarting in late fall, Tulane will publish a legislative newsletter to update advocacy members on current issues and events around the state.
