Karen A. Weissbecker, Ph.D.
(Assistant Professor, Dept. of Psychiatry and Neurology, Human Genetics
Program)
Dr. Weissbecker graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology,
from the University of Virginia in 1982. She received her Ph.D.
in Human Genetics in 1988 from the Medical College of Virginia.
From 1988 - 1990, She was an NIH Postdoctural Fellow in the Medical
Genetics Program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
In 1990, she accepted a second NIH postdoctoral fellowship in the
Department of Biometry and Genetics at Louisiana State University
under the supervision of Dr. Robert C. Elston. She became a Diplomate
Certified in Medical Genetics in September, 1990. Dr. Weissbecker
became an instructor in the Department of Biometry and Genetics
at LSU in February, 1992, and in March of 1994, she was named Co-Director
of the Children's Hospital Neurofibromatosis Clinic. In 1994, Dr.
Weissbecker was promoted to Assistant Professor at LSU. In 1996,
she moved to Tulane University. Her research focuses on the genetic
epidemiology of psychiatric and neurological disorders. She is the
primary investigator of a project investigating the genetics of
obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and its relationship to other
psychiatric disorders. This research is funded by a five year FIRST
award grant from the National Institute of Mental Health. She is
also doing research to locate epilepsy genes.
