Who We Are

The Hayward Genetics Center at Tulane University Health Sciences Center is an interdepartmental multidisciplinary program providing state-of-the-art service, education, and research in the full spectrum of diagnosis, counseling and management of genetic disorders. The faculty of the Hayward Genetics Center includes clinical and basic scientists who specialize in the various areas of human genetics. The faculty includes geneticists who are board certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics in all subdisciplines of Medical Genetics (Clinical Genetics, Clinical Biochemical Genetics, Clinical Cytogenetics, Clinical Molecular Genetics and Ph.D. Medical Genetics). Additional faculty members include research and basic scientists with expertise in biochemistry and molecular biology as well as physicians who are board-certified in various other medical specialties including Maternal/Fetal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Neurology, and Internal Medicine. The Hayward Genetics Center is accredited as a training program by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) and is also accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to provide postdoctoral training (years four and five) in M.D. clinical genetics.

Clinical Genetics Services

The Hayward Genetics Center has been providing primary and tertiary care genetic services to patients for over 20 years and is the referral center for the State of Louisiana Genetic Diseases Program in metabolic diseases. The Clinical Genetics Service provides comprehensive clinical service for patients with all forms of inherited disorders and birth defects. Our board-certified Clinical Geneticists (including a board-certified Geneticist /Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist /Obstetrician) and Metabolic Geneticists work as a team with two board-certified Genetic Counselors and a licensed metabolic Nutritionist to provide diagnosis, genetic counseling and management of genetic disorders, including all inborn errors of metabolism

Clinical Diagnostic Laboratories

The Human Genetics Diagnostic Laboratories provide state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratory services to many hospitals and clinical laboratories, both locally and throughout the country. The Cytogenetics Laboratory was established at Tulane in 1960 and was one of the first such labs in the country and a Molecular Genetics Laboratory was established in 1993. The Biochemical Genetics Laboratory , established in 1978, was the first such laboratory in the Gulf South and has been the reference laboratory to the State of Louisiana for over 20 years for the confirmation of all positive samples identified by state newborn screening for inborn errors of metabolism. The laboratories are accredited by the College of American Pathologists, certified by CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act 1988) and SWOG (Southwest Oncology Group), and participates in all proficiency testing programs offered by CAP, SWOG and the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases Association. Our laboratories are committed to quality and timely performance of testing. The Human Genetics Program is unique in providing the most comprehensive spectrum of genetic services to the medical communities in Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The interpretation of the diagnostic testing is always performed by board-certified Biochemical Genetic, Cytogenetic and Molecular Genetic specialists. The services of the Human Genetics Program Diagnostic Laboratories are available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.

Graduate / Postgraduate/Fellowship Programs

The graduate program in Human Genetics offer a Masters and Ph.D. in Human Genetics and emphasizes the fundamentals of the various facets of human genetic research, current breakthroughs in this rapidly expanding field, and medical aspects of human genetics, including, experience in genetics clinics. The Ph.D. course requirements are designed to provide a complete and broad foundation in human genetics from both research and clinical perspectives. Opportunities are provided for clinical lab experience as well as for attending clinics. The Medical Genetics residency program (PGY-4 and 5) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Additional postgraduate training in Clinical Biochemical Genetics, Clinical Cytogenetics, Clinical Molecular Genetics and Ph.D. Medical Genetics is accredited by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG).
