Tulane Christian Medical Association
The Tulane Christian Medical Association is the local chapter of the national Christian Medical and Dental Association. It is our goal to motivate, educate, and equip Christian medical students to gain mutual strength, skills, and encouragement to integrate the Christian faith into our practice. We facilitate Christian growth, fellowship, and continuity through regular Bible studies, guest speakers, retreats, community service, and events.
How does TCMA do this?
- We get together weekly or bi-weekly for Bible studies or specialized programs. Currently, we are going through a program call "The Saline Solution" which teaches us to integrate our faith in our practice and how to meet the spiritual needs of others in different faiths.
- Throughout the year, we also have guest speakers who are influential within the CMDA community. This past year, the CMDA sponsored talks by Dr. Yvonne Moore, Dr. Walt Larimore, Dr. John Patrick, Dr. Gene Rudd, and Dr. John F. Kilner. The topic of these talks ranged from knowing how to meet the spiritual needs of your patients to ethical issues in medicine. These talks are educational and informative for all students and covers subjects that Foundations in Medicine classes do not have time to cover in detail.
- We sponsor and organize community events to meet other Christian physicians and other Christian healthcare providers. Every year, one or two physicians open up their homes to host a dinner for CMDA students. We also organize events, which are usually potlucks, with the LSU medical, dental, and nursing students.
- We also have monthly potlucks just with the TCMA chapter which helps form relationships between first year students and with those who have gone before them.
- Our community service project is usually different every year, but this past year, we helped out with the SonShine Ministry in the Florida Housing Project. It is one of the poorest communities in New Orleans with the highest crime rate. The SonShine Ministry reaches out to about 100 kids in this community to provide a non-threatening environment in order to play with, read to, and mentor children.
- Every year, we also attend the Southeast Regional CMDA Retreat that is usually held in Mississippi. There we meet with other CMDA students from Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, and other Southern states.
Membership to the Tulane Christian Medical Association is open to all students and does not require national CMDA membership. Weekly and monthly meetings and activities are also open to all students, staff, and faculty.
