Student National Medical Association (SNMA)
The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is the nation’s oldest and largest organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color. One of its missions is to diversify the face of medicine. SNMA is dedicated to increasing the number of minority physicians practicing in medically underserved communities. The SNMA boasts over thirty-five years of committed service to communities and continues to advocate for improved health care services and education to meet the needs of minority and underserved populations.
Our hope is to make a difference in health and medical issues in underserved populations. Members are involved in premedical recruitment, community outreach, and public health education. We implement several national protocols designed to provide underrepresented pre-health students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences.
Our Service Learning Projects include an Obesity Prevention Program and Youth Science Enrichment Program (YSEP). Our community service experiences include but are not limited to Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP) with New Orleans Math and Science High School. HPREP tries to interest young minds in the sciences. SNMA also works with Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (MAPS), which is a service to premedical students, and Reach 2010.
