Call 911 for medical emergencies or use the telephone call list below. If this is an emergency medical situation, such as an overdose, please go directly to an emergency room.

In Houston, call BCM Student and Housestaff Psychiatric Counselling Service at (713) 798-4881.

In NOLA pre-Katrina: after Hours Psychiatric Emergency Telephone List (please note that some of these services might no longer be available).

The on-call physician:
1) First calls the treating therapist if the student names one.
2) Calls Dr. Eckert, Dr. Tomlinson, Dr. Pena or Dr. Carr if there is a medical emergency, the student does not have/does not name a therapist.

In case Dr. Eckert, Dr. Tomlinson, Dr. Pena or Dr. Carr cannot be reached, call Tulane University Medical Center Information at 588-5263 or call Tulane/DuPaul "Respond" staff member at 899-8282 for the psychiatric resident on call. There is always a staff psychiatrist on back-up call.

Counseling Service offers up to 12 sessions of psychotherapy at no charge to all medical students, graduate students, residents, physician assistants, nurse anesthetist students, and clinical fellows, AS WELL AS their significant others and spouses. Common reasons for seeking counseling include relationship difficulties, anxiety, depression, and academic stress.

Once again, services are at no cost to you or your family members, they adhere to the strictest rules of confidentiality, and they do not keep records on computer. They are easily accessible a safe distance away from Baylor College of Medicine.

In New Orelans, if you feel you need to see a psychotherapist, there are a few options available for you. When dealing with ANY Tulane providers always make sure to clearly identify yourself as a Tulane medical student.

Tulane Student Health Centers in New Orleans

Student Health Centers can be a convenient option as services are provided for all students, free of charge, regardless of health insurance coverage. If you feel you must be seen that same day, it is sometimes possible if the providers' schedules permit.

Doctors Eckert, Pena, and Carr frequently provide psychiatric care to medical students via the Uptown Campus Psychiatry Clinic. Psychotherapy is provided at no charge for a maximum of 10 visits. If additional care is needed after 10 visits, staff will work with students to find a provider appropriate for the student's needs.

Independent Providers in New Orleans

Before you contact a specialist, please note that to receive insurance benefits when seeing an in-network or out-of-network provider, you must obtain a referral, available from the Downtown Student Health office. Call the Student Health Coordinator, at 585-6169 to receive a referral form.

The Dean's Office and Tulane affiliates suggest the following providers. You can contact these providers directly to schedule an appointment. Providers who accept Tulane Student Health Insurance are marked with an asterisk (*). Because insurance information changes constantly, please check to make sure student insurance is accepted even if stated below.

Tulane-Depaul Outpatient Services in New Orleans

*Tulane-Depaul offers substance abuse detoxification programs at no charge to students. However, for other outpatient services, it is recommended that Tulane-Depaul be considered only after trying the options above.

To schedule an appointment, call the Intake Coordinator (Jeanne McKay) from 9am to 5pm M-F. Feel free to leave a confidential message.

Students are usually seen by a Tulane Psychiatry Resident within one week.

Understand that appointment scheduling may not always be ideal. However, residents will work with you to find a mutually convenient time.

Up to five visits are provided at no charge as a professional courtesy to Tulane medical students.

If additional care is needed after five visits, residents will work with students to find a provider appropriate for the student's needs.
