THE ROLE AND FUTURE OF THE PHYSIOLOGIST

Physiology is the study of functional mechanisms in living organisms in terms of basic principles of molecular and cellular biology as well as physics, mathematics, and biochemistry. Because of the structural and functional complexity of even simple organisms, physiologists must be able to draw upon knowledge available from many different scientific disciplines. Consequently, several years of training leading to a Doctor of Philosophy degree are necessary for a successful career in physiology at the advanced levels.

Graduate education is now essential for many fields of endeavor. The explosive growth of knowledge in science and medicine increases the need of advanced training for prospective educators, research personnel in industry and academia, and physicians. Because physiology is the pivotal science for medicine and the life sciences, the training of physiologists is critical for the advancement of knowledge and research in these fields.

This brochure is designed to acquaint a prospective Ph.D. candidate in physiology with the training program available at Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans, Louisiana. Information has been included which is of particular interest to the prospective student and supplemental to that available in the Graduate School Bulletin.
