Welcome to the Tulane / Ochsner Pediatric Training Program!

The Tulane/Ochsner Pediatric Residency Training Program is an integrated program offering the pediatrician-in-training an exceptional opportunity to develop competence in all aspects of child and adolescent health care. The program provides a model of excellence in clinical care, including preventive, primary and subspecialty care in one of the world's most interesting cities.

The Tulane Department of Pediatrics Residency Training Program was established in 1927 to teach the fundamentals of child/adolescent health care. As one of the oldest residency training programs in the United States, it has long since surpassed that goal. In conjunction with the Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation, we offer one of the most innovative and diverse pediatric residency curriculums in the nation.

NEW ORLEANS RENAISSANCE

You are, no doubt, aware of the flooding which occured in our area caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. You may not, however, be aware of the spectacular rebuilding efforts which followed. This event precipitated many changes to our program, and has allowed us unparalleled opportunities to redevelop our program and training opportunities. We are alive and well, and our dedication and commitment to training our housestaff is unchanged.

The Tulane Health Sciences Center, which includes the Tulane Hospital for Children, has undergone extensive renovations. New services have been added. A new PER Department opened in 2007. A Hospitalist Service was established to care for general pediatric patients and to offer concurrent care to other services. We are once again caring for children of the city and of the region. The combination of general pediatric and tertiary care patients offer a full range of training of experiences for our housestaff.

The Ochsner Clinic Foundation, never damaged, has continued to operate normally providing health care through its hospital and network of satellite clinic locations. Additional rotations have been developed at this site to take advantage of the large and growing pediatric patient base.

The indigent care hospital, the Medical Center of Louisiana in New Orleans (MCLNO) - University Hospital, is once again providing neonatal and term nursery care and is the site for our trauma rotation. A network of neighborhodd clinics is opening soon and a major new hospital is on the drawing boards.

This is an exciting time of renewal and rebuilding of the medical systems and health services in New Orleans. You can be an important part of it. Come join us as we make history.

A Tulane/Ochsner residency education equips residents with a comprehensive, in-depth knowledge and understanding of normal growth and development and the diseases that affect infants, children and adolescents. Through interactive clinical experience and intensive faculty instruction, Tulane/Ochsner pediatric residents attain broad knowledge in the field of pediatrics and develop personal excellence in essential skills, such as history taking, the physical examination and laboratory and clinical procedures. Residents approach the child as a whole, integrating the patient’s acute problems with his or her stage of growth and development. Graduated responsibility for patient care is a hallmark of the program.

The Tulane/Ochsner Residency Training Program provides residents with practical experience in a variety of hospital and clinic settings, as well as invaluable opportunities to participate in medical research and/or publications. More than 26 subspecialties are available within the department for residents interested in further specialization. Upon completion of the program, graduates have the background for a career in any area of pediatrics, whether community, subspecialty, university or hospital-based practice.
