Curriculum
The primary goal of the Pediatric junior clerkship curriculum is to assist you in acquiring the basic knowledge and skills necessary for the care of children that every physician graduating from Tulane should possess. A secondary goal is to provide a firm foundation for students who wish to pursue further graduate medical education in pediatrics or related fields. The curriculum is based on a national curriculum developed by the Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics (COMSEP). COMSEP is an organization composed of all third year Pediatric clerkship directors from the United States and Canada. The curriculum is divided into sections on normal childhood growth and development, preventive health measures such as immunizations and injury prevention, common acute and chronic pediatric illnesses, issues unique to the special populations of newborns and adolescents, and therapeutics. Each section contains a set of learning objectives that illustrate key ideas and topics that you are expected to master by the end of the block.. You should take a few minutes during the first day or two of the block to scan the curriculum in order to familiarize yourself with the contents. Ideally you should refer back to it on a regular basis during the next eight weeks to ensure that you have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in each area.
