Absences:
Clinical and Educational Duties: There are no unexcused absences permitted for clinical duties. Only two unexcused absences are permitted for lectures. If you are unable to attend your clinical duties at the hospital, clinic, or any other clerkship function, you should promptly notify the attending/supervising faculty member (or senior resident on a ward team), a pediatric clerkship administrator (Ms. Karen Rachal or Dr. Scott Davis), and the Office of Student Affairs. Ideally this notification should be person to person by phone and not by e-mail or voicemail. The latter should only be used as a last resort. The Office of Student Affairs provides letters of excused absence. Failure to immediately notify a clerkship administrator and the Office of Student Affairs in the event of illness, accident, or other reason for an absence may result in an unexcused absence. Excused absences for illnesses cannot be provided unless Dr. Kahn is notified at the time the illness occurs. You should also notify Dr. Kahn's office as soon as possible to receive an excused absence for previously scheduled family activities (e.g. weddings) or other events (e.g. conferences) that will take you away from your clinical duties. Any excessive unexcused absences can be penalized by a reduction in your overall cumulative score by up to 10%.
Attire:
You should wear clothing appropriate for your activities at all times when involved in direct patient care. What that means in the Pediatric department is a little different than what it means in other departments. Because of the nature of our business (e.g. getting down close to the floor to examine a toddler), pediatricians are generally less formal in their professional dress than members of other specialties. You will find, for instance, that some male members of the department don't wear ties and many members of the faculty don't wear white coats. However, if you want your patients and their parents to take you seriously as a member of the health care team, you should look like a professional to them. Dressing up a little may help you convey that impression. Always make sure that your clothes are clean and neatly pressed. Don't wear any clothing that is too short, too tight, or too distracting. Remember to clean your white coat regularly. It is appropriate to wear scrubs when you are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Remember to change the scrubs you are wearing if they become soiled with blood or other fluids in the delivery room, in the operating room, or from a procedure.
Computer Access:
While working at Tulane hospital, you will need to have access to the hospital's computer system (MEDITECH). If you have not already done so, please see Diann Smith in Room 1323 Tidewater Building in order to receive the instruction and password necessary to gain access to the system.
Copying:
You can use the Konica copier in Room 420A (down the resident's hallway). The copier room is open during normal business hours (approximately 8:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday through Friday). See Karen for the copier code. If you have problems with the copy machine or have questions, please see Karen in Room 4536. Please do not use the Canon copier. It is reserved for administrative use only.
The Department of Pediatrics has given you access to a copier to help enhance your learning and the learning of other members of your team or preceptor group. Examples of appropriate uses of the copier include the reproduction of brief articles from the literature for other team members or the printing of handouts to accompany a preceptor group case presentation. Please do not abuse this privilege by reproducing several copies of large review articles or chapters from books for everybody on your team. If possible, ask members of your team if they would like a copy of an article before making a copy for them. Don't wait until the last minute to copy handouts or articles for distribution to your team or preceptor group. If the Konica copier is broken you will have to do your copying elsewhere. The Pediatric Department will not pay for you to have your copying done elsewhere so plan ahead and get your copying done early.

Messages:
You will receive all your communications via e-mail. Notices will not be put into your mailboxes except on rare occasions. You will be responsible for checking your e-mail on a regular basis. If you are off-site, check your e-mail when you return to Tulane for lectures and/or your preceptorship. Also, check the bulletin board outside Room 4533 (Pediatric Library) for updates on lectures, assignments, etc.
Pediatric Library Access:
You have 24-hour a day access to the Pediatric library, Room 4533 (except during conferences, meetings, etc.) The clerkship coordinator has given the Security Department a list containing the names of all T-3s currently assigned to Pediatrics. Call or visit Security on the first floor to gain access to the library after hours. If you do use the library after hours, please call and ask Security to return and lock the room when you are finished. Please do not remove any books or journals from the room.
Personal Protection:
Always use Universal precautions. Be aware of situations where you might find yourself exposed to potentially infectious bodily fluids and take the necessary precautions to protect yourself (examples: drawing blood, starting intravenous lines, performing any kind of procedure on a patient, moving a patient, participating in the delivery and care of a newborn). Review the materials about Universal precautions that were presented to you at the T-3 clerkship orientation. When you rotate onto a new service, make sure you know where the personal protection equipment is located. If you don't know where it can be found, have your resident or members of the staff show you the location. Make sure you know what to do if you do have an occupational exposure to a body fluid.
Personal Safety:
Be aware of your personal security when traveling to and from patient care sites, particularly when you are leaving Tulane, University or Ochsner Hospitals late at night after being "on-call". The Tulane Medical Center police department provides an escort service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can reach the escort service by calling: 988-5531. State your name and location and an officer will be dispatched to meet you. They will pick you up at University Hospital as well as Tulane. A shuttle runs from the main Ochsner hospital building to the parking lot across Jefferson Highway from 5:00 A.M. to 11:50 P.M. Drivers will drop you off at your car if it is late. If you need to leave after the shuttle has discontinued service, you may call extension #23770 for a security escort to your car. Please call Security to escort you to your car at any time you feel the need but particularly if you are alone and/or it is after dark.

Medical Student Abuse:
Abuse can occur in four categories: verbal (swearing, humiliation), physical (threats, harm), sexual (physical or verbal advances, discomfiting humor), and academic (neglect, inappropriate "scut" work). If you feel that you are being abused seek out help from someone as soon as possible. If this is related in some way to the Pediatric clerkship, Dr. Davis would encourage you to contact him by phone (988-2583), by e-mail (shdavis@tulane.edu) or by pager (584-8561) as soon after the incident as possible. Other individuals whom you can seek out are listed below:
1. Phoenix Society Representatives - faculty or student - May help you get through the psychological turmoil of abuse (#'s posted outside the student lounge). Faculty include: Dr. Hosea Doucet (988-5001), Dr. Betty Muller (988-5401). Dr. William Robichaux (988-2423), and Dr. Cathy Lazarus (988-5503).
2. Equal Opportunity Office, Ms. Smith -- Provides formal advice and action for sexual harassment (direct and indirect) and prejudices directed towards you (988-7617). Remember, reporting can be done anonymously and is kept confidential, if requested.
3. Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Kahn -- Has an open door policy for all students (988-5331). Dr. Kahn requests that students who feel that they are being abused in any manner, notify him as soon as possible.
4. A faculty member who you are comfortable talking to can reaffirm your beliefs and direct you to other resources.
5. Fellow student - May help you discover that the problem involves others.
