All specimens should be clearly labeled with the patient's name, source of specimen, date and time of collection , and enclosed in a biohazard bag. A Cytology request form must accompany the specimen and contain the above information plus pertinent clinical history, name of the ordering physician and location of the patient. All PAP smear requests must contain, in addition to the above listed information, the following:- Date of last menstrual period
- Previous abnormal reports
- Treatment and/or biopsy information
Fine needle aspirations (FNA) performed by the Cytopathologist must be scheduled through Access at 988-5800.
Cytology Procedures
Specimen types and proper handling procedures are listed below.- Vaginal/Cervical Smear
- One slide containing cellular material from the cervical transformation zone and endocervical canal of the cervix should be smeared and immediately spray fixed.
- Nipple Secretions
- Rapidly smear secretion on slide and spray with fixative. At least six (6) consecutive smears should be made.
- Sputum
- Should be a deep cough, early morning specimen submitted unfixed, send immediately to Cytology Lab. Shared specimens with other lab sections are unacceptable. Sputum for PCP exam must be induced.
- Bronchial Washing, PeritonealWashing, Broncho-Alveolar Lavage
- Send immediately, unfixed, to Cytology Lab.
- Pleural Fluid, Peritoneal Fluid, Pericardial Fluid, Joint Fluid
- Send unfixed to Cytology Lab. Large glass containers are unacceptable. Plastic tubing should be discarded before specimen is transported to Lab.
- CSF, Urine, Bladder Wash
- Send unfixed immediately to Cytology Lab. These specimens deteriorate rapidly.
- Bronchial Brushing, Esophageal Brushing, Gastric Brushing, Colonic Brushing
- Transfer cellular material to glass slide and immediately spray with fixative.
- Pancreas Transplant Urines
- Fresh voided urine samples are needed. The sample should be the second voided urine of the day and sent to the Cytology Lab immediately.
- Fine Needle Aspirates
- Smear onto glass slides and spray-fix immediately. Call lab at Extension 7392 if there are any questions.
- Special Studies
- Pneumocystis (PCP) and lipid laden macrophage index (LLM). A bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is preferred and should be sent to Cytology lab, fresh and unfixed, immediately after collection.
