Zeynel A. Karcioglu, M.D has been a member of Tulane Ophthalmology and Pathology Departments since 1980 as a resident, instructor, and faculty member. He had his board certifications in Ophthalmology and Pathology, following residency training at Tulane and Emory University Medical Schools in Ophthalmology and Pathology, respectively. He is subspecialized in ophthalmic oncology and orbital diseases and surgery, and limits his clinical practice to these subspecialty areas. Dr. Karcioglu's clinical practice and surgery are primarily stationed at Tulane University Hospital. He is also a member of the Tulane Cancer Center, Charity and VA Hospitals in New Orleans, and other Tulane affiliated hospitals in Louisiana. Dr. Karcioglu is also the recipient of the Haik/St. Giles Endowed Professorship for clinical, research, and educational activities in ophthalmic oncology. During his career, Dr. Karcioglu has participated extensively in the activities of many regional, national and international professional and academic organizations. Dr. Karcioglu is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and College of American Pathology and the recipient of American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Award. He has given many lectures in more than 40 countries n the world as a visiting professor, and guest lecturer. Dr. Karcioglu is the Director of the ophthalmology residency program at Tulane and works closely with the Education and Research Office of the Medical School in medical student teaching, particularly in the development of interactive teaching programs in ophthalmology. Dr. Karcioglu has authored several medical textbooks and several hundred scientific papers, abstracts, and letters in peer reviewed medical journals. He also has reviewed scientific papers for many journals, including American Journal of Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, Ophthalmology, and Archives of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Karcioglu's research is focused on ophthalmic oncology, particularly in the areas of retinoblastoma, externaleEye tumors, and primary and metastatic orbital neoplasms. As a part of his interest in retinoblastoma, Dr. Karcioglu served his sabbatical leave as Director of Research and Chief of the Ophthalmic Oncology Division at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In addition, he was involved in many collaborative research projects with other institutions in Europe and the Middle and Far East during his tenure in Riyadh. As the Director of Tulane's O'Brien Laboratory, Dr. Karcioglu reviews all ocular pathology specimens from Tulane University Hospital and Charity Hospital, and he is in charge of ophthalmic pathology training of the residents.
