International Health Elective: Guatemala
 

There are three different opportunities available in Guatemala. They are Fundacion Behrhorst , in the Guatemalan highlands and Guatesalud and University of Francisco Marroquin , in Guatemala City and then in San Juan Sacatepequez.

Additional Comments:
This program has been in existence for greater than 30 years and was founded by Dr. Carroll Behrhorst. Dr. Carroll Behrhorst is a former Tulane faculty member and family physician. The clinic is located in the Guatemalan highlands which is a temperate region.. Students will provide health care to the local population which is 75% Mayan. The main medical problems include (1) infectious diseases, e.g., amebiasis and ascarisis, (2) orthopedics, (3) occupational-related illnesses, and (4) conditions associated with nutritional deficiencies. Students will have an opportunity to work with community health workers (health promoters). Dr. Carroll Behrhorst was the originator of the health-promoter concept which is currently being used throughout Guatemala.

Additional Comments:
Students will spend the first week in Guatemala City. They will be oriented to the health care system and medical issues of the country. The students will move to Antigua where they will be assigned to a Guatemalan family where they will learn Spanish as well as the Mayan language: Kackchevel. They will travel with a visiting doctor to various plantations (fincas). The student will be required to work on a community health project in conjunction with Dr. Carmen Cerezo at the Ministry of Health.
