Introduction to Anesthesiology at TMC
Anesthesiology is an exciting and challenging field of medicine. This user-friendly elective is
designed to expose the student to some of the day-to-day aspects of the specialty. The course will
consist of tutorials, group discussions, visits to the operating rooms, and hands-on experience with
endotracheal intubation and the starting of intravenous lines. Actual cases will be presented by
staff anesthesiologists in a problem-based format. Topics that will be covered include airway
management, general vs. regional anesthetic techniques, preoperative/postoperative assessment,
intraoperative monitoring, pharmacology, cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology, co-existing
disease, as well as complications and points of interest; e.g. awareness during anesthesia,
malignant hyperthermia, regional anesthetic mishaps, failed intubation, etc.
The staff hopes that this informal exposure will stimulate further interest in our specialty. There
will be neither a final exam nor formal grading. Up to 4 students per session can be accommodated.
The hands-on experience in the operating room will be scheduled on an individual basis. This course
may be taken for one or two sessions. Attendance is strongly encouraged at Resident Lectures at
1:00 p.m. and Student Lectures at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday ( other weekdays) in the Anesthesiology
Library (room 3341b), third floor of the hospital across from the SICU.
