Lung opacification is caused by filling or replacement of the alveolar air spaces with material--fluid in edema, pus in infection such as pneumonia, or tissue such as tumor cells or fibrosis. In this case, there is no overt sign of infection; a fluid-filled area of the lung or a tissue mass would both be considerations.
