Coronal sections of a newborn immature brain. Sections are made through the head of the caudate nucleus and midsection of the thalamus. The immature brain shows poor differentiation of the cortex and white matter and poor or early formation of sulci. The brain shows two focal areas of hemorrhage: in the periventricular area in the germinal matrix. The hemorrhage is larger on the left than on the right side and most likely ruptured on both sides into the ventricles. Diagnosis: Periventricular hemorrhage in immature brain with intraventricular extension.
