streptococci viridans infection
This is the heart of a 28 year old woman who had acute rheumatic fever at age 18. She became febrile 4 days prior to admission, and blood cultures grew cultures of streptococci viridans. She died despite massive doses of antibiotics. The mitral valve leaflets are almost entirely destroyed by bacterial vegetation which have extended onto the atrial endocardium.
