S1C2eea-IMAGE MAP: SECTION 1

The conventions that have been employed in the structuring of the IMAGE MAPS identify the section (S), and the chapter (C).  For labels in the MASTERBORDER that are “S-C-” items only, a click will take the reader to the approproiate textual page. If an “S-C-” item is additionally identified with an “-X,” then the textual page is also a parent page for one or more pictorials at level 3. An “S-C-” item with a “VA-” is a visual aid (i.e., a drawing or a table) at level 3. An “S-C-” item in the MASTERBORDER or at the end of a page with an “-X” is the parent page for pictorials at tier 3. An “S-C-” item with a “P-” identifies a pictorial at tier 3. SECTION 14 is an exception; it is a two level structure. There are no textual pages as such in SECTION 14. An “S-C-” item at level 2 in SECTION 14 will be a clinical photograph. All underlined items in the IMAGE MAP are responsive to a “click;” a “click” on such an item will take the reader to PICTORIALS that have relevance for the respective brief descriptions that follow the labels in the following IMAGE MAP. The items in the IMAGE MAPS of each section might be thought of as an index of a more ordinary type. For SECTIONS 1, 8, and 15, the SECTION MAP is a page that is separate from the IMAGE MAP; it follows the IMAGE MAP as the next chapter (i.e., CHAPTER 3 of SECTIONS 1, 8, and 15). For all the other sections, the SECTION MAP follows the IMAGE MAP on the same page (i.e., the IMAGE MAP is followed by the SECTION MAP and both are part of the second chapter [first chapter of the second tier]). A click on a navigation bar with an “-X” in the blue cluster to the left will reveal in new bars the respective children of the selected bar with an “-X.”

NAVIGATION AIDS:

NAVIGATION AIDS at the end of all the pages provide for sequential movements along the horizontal plane of the selected tier (at tiers 2 & 3); they allow for somewhat restricted movement along the plane (and even back again). At tier 2, they provide access to all the textual chapters in a sequence. Along tier 2, parent chapters are identified with an “-X.” The pictorials at tier 3 are grouped as children of particular parent chapters along tier 2. Movement along tier 3 using the navigation bars in the MASTERBORDER, or at the end of each page is limited by the relationships between a particular parent chapter and pictorials in groups along tier 3. If a textual page is the parent for a group of 10 pictorials, and the viewer is currently viewing one of these pictorials, the navigation aids will provide access to the other nine pictorials in a sequence. When the sequence is exhausted, an additional click will take the reader back to the original pictorial. To access another group of pictorials, the viewer could go to the beige navigation aid in the MASTERBORDER; he should then find the next textual chapter in the downward sequence that is identified with an “X-” (an S-C- item with the suffix “-X”), and then “click” on the next item in the downward sequence. The next item should be the beginning chapter (page) of a new sequence of pictorials. In the first blue cluster of navigation aids in the MASTERBORDER to the left, the parent textual chapters usually will be  grouped in an uninterrupted sequence at the downward end of the blue cluster. Each parent chapter can be identified by the inclusion of an”-X.” In the beige clusters, parental textual chapters preceed their pictorial offsprings in a sequence. These groupings and these relationships limit sequential movement along tier 3 by use of the “NEXT” (SEQUENCE) bar at the end of each page (chapter).

The two green bars at the end of each page provide access to web sites. The bweems.com site provides access to dermatopathologic material of a general nature. The REED PATCH 3 (pathology-skin-rjreed.comm) site is dedicated mostly to a discussion of melanocytic lesions.

The material on this site is from various sources. Most of the material is from the files of the Reed Laboratory of Skin Pathology or from consultation cases. Some of the material is from the Ochsner Clinicopathologic Conference (Drs. William Perret and Marilyn Ray provided access to this material). Some is representative material from the meetings of the Louisiana Dermatologic Society. Finally, a few examples are representative of cases from meetings of the Zola Cooper Seminar. The material on this site is based on, and partly derived from presentations that I gave in the ‘70’s and early ‘80’s. The format and the concepts basically are the same now as then; attemps to present my earlier views as being different from those on this site will be inaccurate.

References are distributed in 3 different formats. For a few sections, referenced are provided on a separate page following groups of textual pages that are non-parent type. These references are old, and the relevant non-parent textual pages were prepared as possible chapters in a proposed textbook that never came to fruition. The references are numbered in a standard fashion. The numbers are provided in the textual chapters of non-parent type as a guide to the relevant references. Later, in developing the format for this site, I included references in the body of the text on pages of textual chapters of parent type. This was found to compromise the format of some of the chapters. I then began adding a reference page as the last page on the second tier. These references are grouped according to general categories. The last item in the blue cluster at the  beginning of the MASTERBORDER will be the navigation bar providing access to this group of references. The references are a mixed bag but should be an aid to a resident or fellow in searching out other pertinent references. For some sections, I could not resist a few references to philosphical debates (polemics, not science).

This diagram is repeated in several of the sections and is discussed in detail in the sections entitiled SITE DIAGRAM (see last bar in mauve cluster below). It has relevance for all of the sites but for SECTION 14, only two tiers are represented. The first tier is always a single chapter (HOME). The first chapter of the second tier is always an IMAGE MAP. For most chapters, a SECTION MAP follows the IMAGE MAP on the same page (i.e., first chapter of the second tier). For chapters 1, 8, & 15, the SECTION MAP is the second chapter of the second tier (as in this diagram). Along the second tier of all chapters but CHAPTER 14, parents are identified with the suffix “-X,” (as in the above diagram).  Along the third tier, visual aids will be idenfied as “S-C-VA-” items; pictorials will be identified as “S-C-P-” items. A reference page will be found in most sections at the end of the second tier.
