S5C27P20-Lymphocytic Infiltrates
(EAC, etc.)

S5C27P20-1: An area of epidermal involvement in a lesion of EAC (superficial pattern) is represented. In this field, the patterns are spongiotic and psoriasiform.

S5C27P20-2: In this field, the epidermal component shows an area of spongiotic vesiculation (EAC, superficial pattern). Superficial fungus infection would have to be considered in the differential diagnosis and ruled out.

S5C27P20-3: The pattern is that of a lymphocytic infiltrate of the dermis. Focally, spaces among collagen bundles of the reticular dermis are widened. Interstitial infiltrates are not a prominent feature.

S5C27P20-4: An alcian blue stain (same as S5C27P20-3) shows an increased amount of mucinous matrix among the collagen bundles of the reticular dermis. A positive response, such as this, does not provide a distinction between a lymphocytic infiltrate of the dermis and a lesion of lupus erythematosus masquerading as a lymphocytic infiltrate.

S5C27P20-5: A mild dermal mucinosis is acceptable in the setting of a lymphocytic infiltrate of the dermis.
