S5C14P8-1: Another example of hypertrophic LE
shows the extremities of columns of hyperplastic squamous cells extending into the upper portion of the reticular dermis. The nests break into the dermis without inducing a tumor, or reactive, stroma. In the process, connective tissue fibers are likely to be entrapped in the interstitium of the infiltrating epithelium (i.e.,
pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia) (S5C19VA2-2). The angulated configuration of the nests at their deep extremities is a feature commonly seen
in areas of infiltrating squamous epithelium, including both pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasias and carcinomas.
