S2C18P12-Acrodermatitis
Enteropathica

S2C18P12-1: The epidermis is acanthotic. There is mild intercellular edema. Some of the keratinocytes show perinuclear vacuoles. There are dyskeratotic cells; the degree to which the dyskeratotic changes are expressed is variable (acrodermatitis enteropathica).

S2C18P12-2: In this area in the basal unit, the defects are reticulated; they contain a few inflammatory cells and scattered necrotic keratinocytes. A few necrotic keratinocytes are present in the defects.

The cluster of aids below provide access to photographs and to respective parent chapters.

S2C18P12-3: A small portion of the basal unit shows hyperplasia of keratinocytes (the cells have lavender cytoplasm; a feature of regenerating keratinocytes). The superficial unit shows degenerative changes with premature keratinization. The degenerating keratinocytes have acidophilic cytoplasm and pyknotic nuclei. There is cytolysis of cells of the superficial unit with the formation of a reticulated vesicle. In some of the defects, individual necrotic keratinocytes are represented in acantholytic patterns.
