S2C13bP7B-Spongioform Pustule
(Fungus Infection)

S2C13bP7b-1: There is a subcorneal pustule. The keratin layer is relatively thin. The inflammatory infiltrates focally are prominent in the epidermis beneath the subcorneal defect ( superficial fungus infection). Collections of extravasated red blood cells are present in the dermis.

S2C13bP7b-2: The patterns are those of a subcorneal and a spongioform pustular disorder. In the spongioform component the patterns are reticulated.

The cluster of aids below provide access to photographs and to respective parent chapters.

S2C13bP7b-3: Blue arrows identify the negative images of fungal hyphae in the keratin layer. The underlying basal unit shows inter-cellular edema.

S2C13bP7b-4: The negative images (i.e., the defects produced in the keratin layer by fungal hyphae) are identified at the tips of blue arrows.

S2C13bP7b-5: This is an additional example of the negative images produced by fungal hyphae.

S2C13bP7b-6: The dermis beneath the pustule shows extravasation of red blood cells. The dermis is edematous. A vessel near the center of the field shows fibrinoid degeneration. In the area about the vessel, there is a loose infiltrate of neutrophils with fragments of nuclear debris; the patterns have a vasculitic quality.
