S15C2P1-2: The lesion bulges into the subcutaneous fat. Some examples of juvenile xanthogranuloma will extend into the fat and may even invade skeletal muscle. Often, the cells of a lesion of juvenile xanthogranuloma are more spindle shaped in the deeper portions; this example is no exception. |

S15C2P2-3: Pale histiocytes are closely spaced. Nuclei vary in outlines and have delicate chromatin. Centrally, the giant cell has its nuclei in a ring-like pattern. |

S15C2P2-4: Some of the histiocytes show zones of cytoplasmic basophilia (green arrows). Some of the nuclei are indented or cleaved. The cytoplasmic basophilia is a feature seen in some examples of reticulohistiocytoma. Either the basophilia has no value as a discriminating feature, or this is reticulohistiocytoma. The overall patterns are more in keeping with juvenile xanthogranuloma. |
