S13C14bP12b-4: This is another example of a solid variant of Kaposi’s disease. Fascicles, that are cut in longitudinal section in this field, are composed of pale spindle cells. Angulated spaces among the cells, and some of the spaces in the cytoplasm of spindle cells, contain red blood cells (generally characterized as extravasated rbc’s). The spaces probably represent abortive vascular channels; the red blood cells are not truly extravasated in all these sites. |

S13C14bP12b-5: At higher magnification, some of the cells have cytoplasmic vacuoles; these vacuoles probably are markers for endothelial vesicles that anticipate the formation of vascular lumina ( a feature of “angioblasts”). In this process, channelization is incomplete; the red blood cells become sequestered within, and eventually among, the tumor cells. Green arrows identify pale bodies which are a feature of lesions of Kaposi’s disease; they may represent degenerating red blood cells.
