S13C14aP12a-4: In this example of Kaposi’s disease (solid variant), the cells have a moderate amount of pale, amphophilic cytoplasm. Slit-like spaces among the spindle cells contain red blood cells. Nuclei are round or oval; they have delicate chromatin patterns. Nuclear characteristics are uniform. |

S13C14aP12a-5: In this field, the cells are arranged in interlacing fascicles. Nuclei are thin and elongated. Slit-like spaces, containing red blood cells, are not a prominent feature. There are spotty infiltrates of lymphoid cells. The pattern is that of the solid variant; it is sarcomatous. |

S13C14aP12a-6: There is some evidence of angiomatous transformation in this field. A green arrow identifies a mitotic figure. Blue arrows identify a small cluster of acidophilic droplets. These droplets are common in lesions of Kaposi’s disease, particularly in lesions showing the patterns of the solid variant. The droplets are an aid in the diagnosis of Kaposi’s disease; they may represent fragments of red blood cells. Generally the small droplets are less acidophilic than the neighboring red blood cells.
