S12C23P13-Palisaded Granuloma

S12C23P13-1: In this small, “early” lesion of granuloma annulare, two collagen bundles are sequestered. The sequestered bundles are outlined by palisades of histiocytes; one sequestered bundle is outlined by green arrows. The sequestered bundles are more brightly acidophilic than the adjacent collagen bundles.

S12C23P13-2: The pattern of  granulomatous “ring-binding” is represented.

S12C23P13-3: In this area, histiocytes are palisaded about a defect. They have complex cytoplasmic processes. The defect probably represents the site in which a collagen bundle has been digested by the proteolytic enzymes of the histiocytes. The pattern is reminiscent of the hyperplasia of synoviocytes along the surface of an inflamed synovial membrane.
