S12C15aP5a- Granuloma Annulare

S12C15aP5a-1: In this field, at the margin of a lesion of granuloma annulare, the cellular area on the right represents the advancing margin. The trail, to the left, is characterized by a reduction in the size of individual collagen bundles and by widening of spaces among the collagen bundles. Some of the patterns of small collagen bundles may be evidence of unbundling. To the right, histiocytes form traceries among collagen bundles. In the area outlined by green arrows, the patterns qualify as granulomatous “ring-binding;” in this area, a single bundle is sequestered and outlined by histiocytes (green arrows).

S12C15aP5a-2: At the bottom of the field to the right, histiocytes are closely spaced in granulomatous patterns. In the middle of the field and to the left, the histiocytes form traceries among collagen bundles. There is a giant cell to the left. The activated histiocytes have complex, cytoplasmic processes (granuloma annulare [GA]).

S12C15aP5a-3: The cytoplasmic processes of loosely clustered histiocytes form complex patterns. Some of the collagen bundles are loosely fibrillated (unbundling?). Wisps of collagen bundles are preserved among the cytoplasmic processes of histiocytes in areas. The cytoplasmic processes facilitate the unbundling and digestion of collagen bundles.

S12C15aP5a-4: Activated histiocytes are engaged in the unbundling and digestion of collagen bundles. The partially digested bundles appear to be fibrillated.
