S11C14P9-1: Perineal granuloma inguinale. |
|
S11C14P9-3: The infiltrates near the dermal-epidermal interface are composed of histiocytes and scattered clusters of neutrophils. (blue arrows). The histiocytes are loosely spaced; they are not tightly arranged in epithelioid patterns. |

S11C14P9-4: This pattern probably represents a dermal papilla cut in cross-section. In the papilla, there are scatttered neutrophils. Histiocytes are of two types: 1.) migratory forms with scanty cytoplasm and elongated, wavy nuclei; and 2.) activated histiocytes with pale acidophilic cytoplasm and eccentric nuclei. |

S11C14P9-6a, b, & c: sections of lesions showing Donovan bodies at various magnifications (Warthin-Starry stain; a silver impregnation technique). It would be difficult to characterize any of the organisms as having the appearance of a “closed safety-pin.” To the left in figure P9-6c (third, or bottom photo ), organisms are marginated in a cytoplasmic vacuole. Centrally and to the right, the organisms are extracellular.
