S10C5bP3b-Calcific Collagenosis
(Elastosis)

S10C5bP3b-1: Elastic fibers, in a band-like zone in the upper portion of the dermis, are calcified; they are lavender and irregular in outlines. Some have degenerated to form granular debris. The dermis in the area of calcific collagenosis (elastosis) is somewhat fibrotic. Histiocytes and foreign body giant cells are present among the altered elastic fibers (pseudoxanthoma elasticum).

S10C5bP3b-2: Vacuoles distort the calcific deposits. Many of the calcified fibers have fractured; others have been reduced to granular debris.

S10C5bP3b-3: On some of the elastic fibers, the deposits of calcium appear to be segmental in distribution (PXE).

S10C5bP3b-4: The calcific deposits vary in size and distribution. Some of the deposits have fragmented to form granular debris. To the left of the center of the field, collagen bundles are reduced in size and widely spaced. To the right the collagen bundles are coarsened and closely spaced. A multinucleated giant cell is present at the interface between the two patterns of altered collagenous tissue (PXE).
