This image shows a peripheral blood sample from a patient with hairy cell leukemia.
"Hairy" cells are evident. These abnormal lymphocytes are intermediate
cells with abundant cytoplasm and villous cytoplasmic projections. The nuclei are
round, oval, or slightly lobulated. Nucleoli are inconspicuous.
Only about 10% of cases will show significant lymphocytosis in the peripheral blood,
and the number of hairy cells are usually low.
