Monocytes are phagocytic white blood cells. As the below pictures illustrate, they can vary in size, from 16-20 micrometers in diameter. They are distinguished by their kidney shaped, often folded nuclei. There are normally 2 - 8 x 10^8 monocytes/L of blood.
