------------
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women ages 35 to 54. Today, one woman in eight will develop breast cancer. Studies have proven that a woman's chance of survival increases substantially if breast cancer is detected on time. Mammograms aid in the early detection of cancer. The Tulane's Women's Imaging Center also performs breast ultrasounds and stereotactic biopsies of the breast.

Mammograms are performed in the Tulane's Women's Imaging Center, located on the second floor of Tulane University Hospital & Clinic, 1415 Tulane Ave., next to Radiology. Call the Women's Health Center toll-free at (877) 988-5100 or locally at (504) 988-5100 to make your appointment.

Women can choose between two types of appointments:
  1. Breast Health Program Exam
This visit take about 30 minutes and includes: Because the Breast Health Center is a component of the Tulane Cancer Center and Tulane's Center for Women's Health, we have a highly skilled, multidisciplinary staff available to develop individualized treatment plans as needed. If a mammogram indicates that further testing is appropriate, our staff is accessible to counsel the patient regarding options -- during the initial visit. If you've had a mammogram before at another facility, we ask that you bring the last film with you. By doing this, we are able to more accurately judge any changes in the breast since the last mammogram. If you wish to book this type of appointment, be sure to tell the attendant that you want a "Breast Health Program Exam" when you call.

  2. Mammography Appointment
This visit takes only 15 minutes. It includes a mammogram, but no clinical breast examination, risk assessment or self-examination instruction. The results of your mammogram will be mailed to you and to your primary care physician. If you wish to book this type of appointment, be sure to tell the attendant that you want a "Mammography Appointment". The staff of Tulane's Breast Health Program is sensitive to the medical needs of women and is pleased to provide this invaluable service. If it is time for your annual mammogram, consider the advantages of our Breast Health Program.

Call the Women's Health Center toll-free at (877) 988-5100 or locally at (504) 988-5100 for more information.
There have been many conflicting reports in the media lately regarding the benefits of mammography. Tulane's breast cancer experts and most of the medical community at large await more data and the outcome of scholarly debate before advocating any change in our recommendations for mammography. At this time, it is our opinion that an annual mammogram and a clinical breast exam beginning at age 40 is the best way for women to avoid dying from breast cancer.
