scarf October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Tulane Cancer Center has several worthwhile programs planned to raise breast cancer awareness throughout the community There are several other breast cancer awareness/fundraising events planned for October as well: In September: See our women's cancers and prostate cancer webpages for more.
There have been many conflicting reports in the media lately regarding the benefits of mammography. Tulane's breast cancer experts and most of the medical community at large await more data and the outcome of scholarly debate before advocating any change in our recommendations for mammography. At this time, it is our opinion that an annual mammogram and a clinical breast exam beginning at age 40 is the best way for women to avoid dying from breast cancer.

Susan G. Komen Foundation's Race for the Cure
Roosevelt Mall, City Park, New Orleans

Race details and entry form.
The Komen Race for the Cure Series is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world. This year, races will be held in more than 100 U.S cities and three foreign countries with over 1.3 million participants expected. Proceeds from the Komen "Race for the Cure" Series help fund important breast cancer research as well as breast health initiatives on a local level. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds remain in the local community where the race is held, helping to support breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs for the medically underserved. These programs are funded based upon a special needs assessment survey performed by each Komen affiliate. A minimum of 25 percent of race proceeds helps fund breast cancer research and project grants awarded through Komen Foundation headquarters. Tulane faculty and staff interested in joining the Tulane team should contact Ed Smith at ed.smith@hcahealthcare.com or 988-1023.

The American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K Walk

Making Strides is a non-competitive walk designed to raise awareness, foster camaraderie, and raise funds for breast cancer research, services, patient education, and advocacy. Since 1993, Making Strides has been the American Cancer Society's rallying cry to raise awareness and dollars to fight breast cancer. Last year, 325,000 walkers across the country collected more than $26 million. Making Strides pledges are dedicated to life-saving American Cancer Society research, education, patient support and advocacy programs to defeat this disease. Individuals of all ages are welcome to participate. Take as long as you need to finish, or walk as far as you are able. The event will be held rain or shine. Participants in wheelchairs should contact their local American Cancer Society office before the event. Bicycles and in-line skates are not allowed. There is no pre-registration or registration fee for the event. Register on the morning of the event and bring your pledges with you. Participants are not required to raise a minimum amount. Pledges are made for your participation rather than per mile. Obtain pledges of $10, $25, $50 or $100. Pledges may be turned in at registration. If you haven't finished collecting by the day of the event, copy the pledge sheet and mail remaining pledges in later. If you are unable to attend, you may still collect and mail in pledges in support of Making Strides.
