This Electronic Still Camera (ESC) image shows the new Mir-24 crew, in the Docking Module between the Space Shuttle Atlantis and the Russian Mir Space Station. The Mir crew waves goodbye to the STS-86 Atlantis crew, as they prepare to undock. The crew, left to right, are Anatoliy Y. Solovyev, commander; David A. Wolf, cosmonaut guest researcher; and Pavel V. Vinogradov, flight engineer. Wolf, giving the thumbs up, replaced C. Michael Foale onboard Mir, during the seventh Atlantis/Mir docking mission. David A. Wolf the new cosmonaut guest researcher for Mir-24, spends his final days aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis prior to transferring to duty aboard the Russian Mir Space Station. Wearing the flight suit of Mir-24, Wolf joined Anatoly Y. Solovyev, commander; and Pavel V. Vinogradov, flight engineer, before Atlantis and Mir undocked and went on their own ways.
Backdropped against a "floor" of clouds, this view of the Space Shuttle Atlantis was taken by the two Mir-21 cosmonaut crew members onboard Russia's Mir space station, during rendezvous and docking operations on March 23, 1996. Part of a solar array panel connected to the Mir is seen in the foreground.
